Licenses & certifications section
Also called: LinkedIn certifications, LinkedIn licenses, credential URL
Definition
Licenses & certifications is a LinkedIn profile section listing credentials you've earned, such as professional licenses or vendor certifications. Each entry names the credential and its issuing organization, usually with dates and, optionally, a credential ID or verification link.
Adding a certification
Some course and certification providers offer an Add to Profile button. LinkedIn says it no longer fills in the details for you, so you still type them in yourself.
- 1
Open your profile
Click Add profile section. Licenses & certifications is listed under Recommended.
- 2
Fill in the form
Enter the credential's name and pick the issuing organization, then add the dates and any credential ID or link the issuer gave you.
- 3
Save and repeat
Each license or certification is a separate entry.
Making entries easy to verify
- Add the credential URL from the issuer's verification page, not a screenshot or a link to a course homepage.
- Use the issuer's exact credential name so it matches what a recruiter would search for.
- Add an expiration date where one applies, and remove or renew credentials that have lapsed.
- Copy the credential ID exactly as the issuer shows it, so it can be matched on the issuer's side.
- List a renewed credential once with its current dates, rather than adding a new entry each time.
Certifications vs other profile sections
Degrees and diplomas belong under Education, and course completions without an assessment usually fit better under Courses. Keep Licenses & certifications for credentials an outside body issued and can confirm. A link to a public verification page is the strongest thing you can attach, because a recruiter can check it without contacting anyone.
Showing them on your website
LinkedInEmbed's certifications widget displays this section as a grid and adds a “Show credential” link wherever an entry has a credential URL, so filling that field in pays off twice.
