What happens to my LinkedIn widget if I change my profile?
Short answer
Changes to your public LinkedIn profile, such as a new headline, photo, job, skill, certification or recommendation, show in your widget after the next refresh: within 96 hours on Free, 24 hours on Pro or 30 minutes on Essentials. Sections you hide from your public profile stop appearing. You don't need to change the embed code.
Common changes and what you'll see
Company pages work the same way: a new logo, about text, follower count or job posting appears after the next refresh.
Changes other people make flow through as well. If a connection edits a recommendation they wrote, or you remove a connection and LinkedIn withdraws the recommendations between you, the widget follows LinkedIn after the next refresh. A widget doesn't keep a history: it always shows your public profile as it was at the last refresh.
| Change on LinkedIn | In your widget |
|---|---|
| New headline, photo, cover image or about text | Updated after the next refresh |
| New job or updated experience | Profile card shows it after the next refresh |
| New certification or project | Added to the certifications or projects widget |
| Accepted or hidden recommendation | Added or removed in the recommendations widget |
| Section switched off in your public profile settings | Stops appearing, because it's no longer public |
| Public profile turned off entirely | Profile information is no longer publicly available to show |
If you change your profile URL
LinkedIn says that when you change your custom profile URL, the previous one stays linked to you for six months unless you unlink it, and an unlinked URL can be claimed by someone else after seven days. Company page URLs can also be reassigned to another page after a change.
Your widgets were created from the URL you pasted, so after a URL change, check that your widgets still update. If something looks wrong, contact support with the old and new URLs. See how to find and customize your profile URL.
Changing what the widget shows
- To hide something only on your website, such as skills or experience, turn it off in the widget settings instead of on LinkedIn.
- Changing your name on LinkedIn can change the URL LinkedIn assigned you; a custom URL you've set stays the same.
- Design and display changes go live as soon as you save; LinkedIn data changes wait for the next refresh.
- Want a change to show sooner? Refresh intervals are shorter on Pro (24 hours) and Essentials (30 minutes). See how often widgets update.
