LinkedIn @mention
Also called: mention, tag someone on LinkedIn, @mention
Definition
An @mention tags a LinkedIn member or Page in a post or comment: you type @, start the name and pick it from the list. The name becomes a link to their profile or Page, and a mentioned member receives email and app notifications.
How mentions work
- 1
Type @
In a post or comment, type @ and start typing the name. On mobile you can tap the @ icon instead.
- 2
Pick the right person or Page
Choose from the list. For common names, add the company to your search to find the right person.
- 3
Publish
The name turns into a link, and mentioned members are notified. You can also edit a post or comment later to add a mention.
When a mention doesn't work
- The member has turned mentions off; LinkedIn tells you they can't be mentioned.
- LinkedIn may restrict mentioning people you aren't connected to, although in general you don't need to be connected.
- The selection wasn't made from the list, so the name stays plain text.
- Posting through LinkedIn's API: an organization mention only becomes a link if the text matches the organization's full name.
Using mentions well
Mention people because the post is about them or genuinely useful to them: a collaborator on the work, a speaker you're quoting, a client who agreed to be named. Long lists of mentions added only to boost reach tend to annoy the people tagged. Before naming a client or colleague in public, check they're happy to be associated with the post, and double-check you picked the right person when several share a name.
Mentions on your website
In a LinkedInEmbed feed, mentions in your posts stay clickable and lead to the profile or Page on LinkedIn. Showing posts where other people mention you is a different matter; see showing posts by hashtag or mentions and the question of permission.
