LinkedIn post impressions
Also called: impressions, members reached, LinkedIn post views
Definition
On LinkedIn, impressions count how many times a post was shown on screen. Because one person can see a post several times, LinkedIn also reports members reached: the number of distinct members and Pages that saw it.
Impressions and the metrics around them
| Metric | What it counts |
|---|---|
| Impressions | Times the post was shown on LinkedIn; an estimate |
| Members reached | Distinct members and Pages that saw the post |
| Reactions, comments, reposts | Responses to the post |
| Engagement rate (Pages) | Interactions divided by impressions; see engagement rate |
How Page analytics define an impression
For LinkedIn Pages, an impression is counted when at least half of a post is on a signed-in member's screen for at least 300 milliseconds. Page metrics can take up to 48 hours to appear, apart from reactions and comments.
On a personal profile, post analytics are private to you, and your own views and engagement count toward them. LinkedIn keeps some figures longer than others: discovery and engagement counts for 1,000 days and members reached for 400 days.
Reading impressions sensibly
- Compare like with like: the same format, posted at a similar time, from the same account.
- Look at impressions next to engagement. Many impressions with few reactions usually means the opening line isn't stopping people.
- Watch the trend over several weeks rather than reacting to one post.
- Check members reached too, to see whether a high count came from many people or from repeat views.
- Remember what impressions don't measure: whether the right people saw it, or what they did next.
Impressions vs views on your website
LinkedIn's numbers stop at LinkedIn. When posts appear on your own site, any counts come from the tool showing them: LinkedInEmbed records only aggregated daily view and click counts per widget, kept separate from LinkedIn analytics. What those counts are is explained with its privacy details.

- LinkedIn engagement rate
- Engagement rate is the share of a post's impressions that led to an interaction. In LinkedIn Page analytics it's clicks, reactions, comments and shares divided by impressions, so 30 interactions on 1,000 impressions is a 3% engagement rate.
- LinkedIn repost
- A LinkedIn repost shares someone else's public post with your own network. A plain repost passes it on unchanged; “Repost with your thoughts” adds your commentary on top, with the original post shown underneath.
- LinkedIn follower
- A LinkedIn follower is someone who has chosen to see your public posts and articles in their feed. Following is one-way: unlike a connection, it needs no acceptance and doesn't make either of you part of the other's network.
