How do I make my LinkedIn posts public?
Short answer
Choose “Anyone” under “Who can see your post?” before you publish. On desktop, click Start a post, open the dropdown by your name and select Anyone. LinkedIn saves that choice as your default for next time. You can't change a post's visibility after sharing it, so a connections-only post has to be posted again.
How to share a public post on desktop
- 1
Start a post
Click Start a post at the top of your LinkedIn homepage.
- 2
Open the post settings
Click the dropdown next to your name. Under “Who can see your post?”, choose Anyone.
- 3
Choose who can comment
Under “Who can comment on your post?”, choose Anyone, Connections only or Off. This is separate from who can see the post.
- 4
Publish
Add your text and media, then click Post. You can also schedule it with the clock icon; a scheduled post keeps the visibility you set when you created it.
What each visibility option means
LinkedIn remembers the option you pick as your default, so check the dropdown when you switch between public and private posts.
| Option | Who can see the post | Embeddable and shown in widgets? |
|---|---|---|
| Anyone | Anyone on or off LinkedIn, including people who aren't signed in | Yes |
| Connections only | Only the author's 1st-degree connections | No |
| Group | Only members of the group where it was shared | No |
Making an existing post public
LinkedIn's help center is clear that you can't change the visibility option after you've shared a post. If an important post went out as Connections only, the way to make it public is to share it again with Anyone selected, then delete the old version if you don't want both.
Sharing again creates a new post, so reactions and comments on the original stay with the original. If the old post has a useful discussion, you can keep it and share the public version with a short note. Going forward, check the audience each time you post: LinkedIn pre-selects your last choice, which is easy to miss.
Why public visibility matters for your website
- LinkedIn's “Embed this post” only works for posts shared as public. See why “Embed this post” is missing.
- Widgets such as the LinkedIn feed widget can only show public posts too.
- LinkedIn says posts set to Anyone may be visible off LinkedIn and that search tools may crawl and display them. See do LinkedIn posts show up in Google?
- Who can comment is a separate setting, so a public post can still limit comments to your connections or turn them off.
